The Brew Crew, The Celts, Agent Zero & True Grit

20 December 2010 View Comments

A lot has gone on in the world of sports in the last 48 hours…and while lots of this stuff has been talked and analyzed to death, I have a few things to say…

Greinke for President!

The Brewers are making an effort to be legit. Really. I first caught wind of the Zach Greinke to Brewers trade as I was glancing over my Twitter feed on the way to work. I thought to myself “Huh? Never woulda guessed he ended up there, who’d the Brewers give up?”

I expected to see that they landed Greinke, and a prospect or two for Ryan Braun or Corey Hart….but of course that was not the case. The Brew Crew added a legitimate ace without giving up any major offensive fire power. I LOVE this move. Though the Brewers finished below .500 last year, I have a feeling they will turn that around this year, and be a serious competitor to end up in the NL Playoffs. At the very least, I expect them to give some powerhouse teams a run for their money. So long as they can keep home run threat Prince Fielder happy, and hold on to some key pieces like Greinke, Hart and Braun for a little while longer, they are going to turn some heads. Call it a hunch.

The top dogs in the NBA are…

Forget LeBron James taking his talents to South Beach.

Forget Kobe Bryant and the Lakers.

Forget Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, Jeff Green and the rest of the Thunder (for now anyway)

The Boston Celtics are for real. With a roster full of players that are practically AARP members, they keep finding a way to win. 13 straight at this point. 13 straight games!

What makes the Celtics my favorite to win the NBA finals is this : every player on that team makes another one better.

The big three of Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen & Paul Pierce are doing things that they shouldn’t be at their respective ages. Couple that with the above the norm play from an aging Shaquille O’Neal, the role players off the bench like Jermaine O’Neal & Nate Robinson and the out of this world play from Rajon Rondo (my pick for MVP), the Celtics are flying high.

I know it is still pretty early in the season, but I am calling it now when I say the Celtics & Thunder will face off in the NBA finals this summer.

An example of a stupid trade(s)

Otis Smith has made a mistake. Trading Rashard Lewis for Gilbert Arenas may go down as one of the dumbest moves we have seen in a very long time. All you have to do is take a  look at the dudes rap sheet :

  • Suspended for 50 games for bringing a gun into the Washington Wizards locker room.
  • Faking an injury in his first game back so a rookie teammate could get some playing time.
  • A serious “me me me” attitude.
  • Gun charges for carrying an unlicensed fire arm in Washington DC.

Couple these issues with the fact that he is injured more than hes been on the court since 2007 & the Magic are already loaded in the back court, this trade really leaves me scratching my head. I suspect that this move–if it goes at I suspect it will–could mark the beginning of the end for Smith in Orlando.

A travesty…

This has nothing to do directly with sports, but the ads have been all over ESPN.com, so I figure what the hell I will touch on it…

I love Jeff Bridges as much as the next guy, but is “The Dude” really the right person to star in a John Wayne remake?  Some movies should never be remade, and True Grit is one of them.

I’m pretty sure the Royals could have done better than what they got for Greinke, but since he had 15(?) teams on his No-Trade List, they were limited in their dealings with other teams. Overall, it’s a solid return and too early to determine until the players develop (or not) for KC. [Minor edit, but it's Zack, not Zach.]

  • Bryant Martin

    1. Yes, whatever the Boston Celtics are doing, it’s working! They are getting it done out there on the court. I’m looking forward to their game next month against San Antonio.
    2. On the trade, eh, it was pretty stupid. I have been a fan of Rashard Lewis for years, but this year he has been putting up mediocre numbers. I could sense a trade coming up to make a change in the team, but definitely not what happened. Should have done a forward/forward trade, not forward/guard. But we shall see once they get a few games in with the new team and see how they do. I am also anxious to see how Turkoglu does, seeing that he performed well in his years with the Magic, but once traded to Phoenix, he hasn’t been doing too well.
3 Finally, I agree with the Jeff Bridges comment. Some movies just do not need to be redone. A lot of movies are ruined that way, and it will be hard to pull off a John Wayne.

True Grit isn’t JUST a John Wayne movie. It WAS, because at that time you didn’t make a western and NOT feature him in it. Jeff Bridges is the perfect actor to play a troubled, alcoholic, tortured character the likes of Rooster Cogburn. Also, the Cohen brothers haven’t ever made a movie I didn’t like, so I trust them.
