Addressing the Tim Tebow Post, part 1 of 3

by Thomas E. Gemkow on September 28, 2009

Yesterday’s post about Tim Tebow and his “crushing” hit against the University of Kentucky last Saturday obviously struck a  chord with many Tebow supporters out there. tebow

Within the first five minutes that the article was posted on Facebook, I must have received ten comments talking about how my assessment of Tim Tebow was unfair, and that the hit he suffered was absolutely horrendous.

The post that I published yesterday, while it may have been hasty–I was working on a ten minute time table before I went back to work–it is still in all my best estimations, a very accurate observation.

The headline of the article was “Tebow needs to learn to take a hit”. Many of you took my post as “Wow, I can not believe Thomas would post such slander on the Internet, Tebow really DID get crushed”

That was not at all the intent. When the video was posted, I was not aware of the fact that yes his head did get drilled by a teammates knee. My bad. However, let’s look past that fact, and analyze the rest of what the blog was meant to be, which is a conversation starter about Tim Tebow, and the fact that he has never really been tested from a durability stand point, which could hinder his performance at the pro level.

Now, I have a lot of fact based tidbits of information to put into this story, that would make it too long to read all in one shot, so, that said we are going to make this a three part series.

The first part, which you will be able to read below, is a response to some of the basic comments left on my Facebook link that was posted yesterday. Consider them a precursor of what is to come over the next two entries.

The second post, which will be up tomorrow in the early afternoon, will be about my thoughts on Tebow, statistically–and of course there will be further explanation of my “Tebow needs to learn to take a hit” comment.

Finally, for the third post, we will take a look at not just Tebow’s projected success at the next level, but how the entire powerhouse that is University of Florida football, tends to struggle at the NFL level.

Sound like a good time?  I think so.

My goal is not to change any one’s opinion, but rather to help you see it from another side. Fans are often very biased and do not look at black and white facts before getting emotional and upset when someone says something adverse about their superstar.

My goal IS to let you know that the comments I posted yesterday, while they may seem brash, opinionated and “hateful” towards an iconic college football star, were actually just rather vague, yet based on fact.

Ready? Set? Go!

(warning, these comments in quotations have not been edited for grammar or content, only for swear words. we like to keep things family oriented on this page :-) )

bad form sir lol. if he went down without the knee to the back of the head he would have been fine
Yes, you are probably right, a knee to the back of the head would be enough to make anyone cringe. However, I can think of things that are a lot worse. All that aside, if you look at the hit that Tebow actually took, before the knee, it still ranks as one of the hardest hits he has seen in his NCAA career.
he’s a wimp the whole team are wimps they suck i f*ckin hate them ugh i agree with you andy but then i wouldn’t give them the satisfaction of sucking my a**

Okay, well, this is a perfect example of a rash fan, acting out of emotion. No one accused Tebow of being a wimp. No where in my post did I say that. I said “Tebow needs to learn to take a hit”. I did not say that Tebow is a cry baby, or a wimp. Ever. And really…is the cursing nessacary? Aren’t we all adults? Come on, if you are going to post on my page, keep in PG please.

dude he was puking so hard when they were carrying him away…
He also had a stomach virus. So yeah, the hit may have enduced it, but they guy was so sick, he traveled separate than the rest of the team for the trip to Lexington…which by the way, props to Tebow for playing with the flu–yet again, further indication that Tebow is indeed, not a wimp.
Seriously thomas?? I thought you were a better sports fan then this.
Fans speak out of emotion…as you will see with the rest of the comments. I speak out of fact, as you will see with this post, and the next two.
He definitely isn’t soft, but this is football!! People get hit all of the time. People get injured all of the time… If fans can’t deal with it, they should watch poker or chess!
Yes, this is football, and yes people get hit. I for one am not fan of any rule that protects the quarterback differently than any of the other guys on the field.  Good show in bringing some reality to the conversation…it is a violent sport. Expect to see violent things. If you don’t like watching the replays of crushing hits, turn them off.
I AGREE WITH YOU RICH! this is football people! it wasnt like he took a knee without his helmet on. that whole thing is weak.
Great point. Did you know that those helmets can withstand a strike to the head that is in the upwards of 100g’s? That is the equivilant of running into a brick wall at 25 MPH. Don’t believe me? Check out tomorrow’s post. I will get you a link…true story!
he hit wasn’t that bad… and if i was that DL coach i would be p*ssed because he didnt try for the ball at all!!!! anyways the hit wasnt the part that was bad… it was when he came down and he head sped forward and made his chin touch the tip of his sternum, that was the bad part! I think tebow will be back in full effect and if he does go ..next level i hope he lands in Jax and brings some life to this shit hole team… maybe even a fan base or sumthing!!! btw-try it out, see if you can touch the tip of your sternum with your chin?
Yes, Tebow would be ideal to land in Jacksonville as a pro. Let’s just hope they get a good line infront of him. Tebow is not used to being knocked around. (again before you all get upset, read more tomorrow, I will show you what I mean)

e fact of the matter is, whether or not he hit his head on his teammates knee is irrelevant. If you take the sentence “Tebow needs to lean how to take a hit” on its own, it’s absolutely true. He’s never been really rocked by anyone. Never really tested to that degree. I don’t think anything was said in poor taste. I think the people who say that are simply upset Superman collided with a teammate who happened to be wearing kryptonite knee pads. Sure he was throwing up, he had a concussion…on top of the flu. He and the other ill players were already throwing up all game. What bothers me is media outlets crucifying Kentucky’s defense for celebrating. They stopped as soon as they realized he wasn’t getting up. I think it’s BS that Urban Meyer was trying to impersonate Steve Spurrier and keep running it up. Tebow should have been on the sidelines after the punt block TD, it was already over. If anyone’s to blame, I think it’s him.

All very well thought out, funny and true. Thank you for brining humor to the end of that string of comments.

So, as you can see above, this was a heated topic for many people. I did not put all of the back and forth banter in their because well, some of it was just bickering, but if you want to read it, read it here.
Be sure to check back tomorrow, when we address in depth what I meant by the statement “Tebow needs to learn to take a hit” by addressing his career with UF, and the lack of physical abuse he has taken. We will couple that with a look at what may potentially happen to him in the NFL, given what we KNOW now.

Thanks for checking this out…and leave comments on the page this time so all the readers can see…not just Facebook users. Let’s try and get a wider conversation going.

So, Jimmy Clausen will be a terrific PRO QB in YOUR opinion,…cause he's gotten a TON of practice being hit, playing in Charlie Weis' offense! Yeah, he was sack a bunch!
Really, Tebow can't be a Pro because he hasn't been HIT?…That really is part of your "distain" for him? Gheesh, you need site Hits from Hater fans THAT BAD? Give me a break, dude has played with a broken hand, ahs said "Nice hit" to a many number of defenders who tackled him after HE RAN THE BALL!…but no, you're spot on here, in that he needs to learn (per YOU) whow to take a hit.
What a clown you are! Good luck with your "anti-Tebow" campaig. Oh, and saying a College QB wont make it at the Pro level,, WOW!…there's a cutting edge challenge, eh? How many HAVE failed!…Oh, wait, by your accounts, only Gator Football players fail!…Sorry, must be my emotions cloudy my judgement! …Clown-act!

Jump December 1, 2009 at 4:43 pm

"distain"?….When did Websters' change the meaning of the word "distain", with the word "ignorance"?
Where did YOU play Football?…"No?!?!"…"REALLY??..You never played even as a kid"….yeah, color me stunned!
Who do you think will be mentioned in the NFL's rookie of the year, for 2009?..Will it be Percy Harvin, or Louis Murphy? -Who leads the NFL in Rushing yards?…Must be that one guy from Ohio State huh?
Don't worry, next year you can hate on some other popular College player, and hopefully the rest of the fans that hate that player/team will join in with you and tell you how right you are!….Then, when the fans of that player (and team) chime in that your're an idiot, you can say they are only doing that because they are "emotional"! -What a great system you'll have.
Your masses await your next essay with baited anticipation, I'm sure! RAGE ON!!!!

Jump & Norm…if you are going to attempt to correct something I write…make sure you yourself, have the proper definition of the word…

SO, perhaps a lesson in grammar is needed:

Disdain:a feeling of contempt for someone or something regarded as unworthy or inferior
Distain:Middle English disteynen, from Anglo-French desteindre to take away the color of, from de- + teindre to dye, from Latin tingere to wet, dye

So no, I am not "taking color" away from Tebow, I am saying that MY OPINION is that he will not make it in the NFL as a QB.

ThomasGemkow December 1, 2009 at 4:54 pm

Jump, I never did claim to play college football, however I did spend 9 years of my life playing the game. So yeah, I do have some background with it.

No one is raging other than you. You seem to be really upset for some reason. Sorry that my blog post about Tebow offended you and the "bromance" you may have for him.

Take the time to read the other posts on this page, without your "emotion" clouding your judgment and you will see that I don't think Tebow is a bad guy, I just don't think he will be a QB on the next level…and that is okay.

Hell, read this comment thread and you would have seen that.

When you post a comment on a page, you really should read ALL sides before acting in an overly emotional way. That shows insecurity.

Oh wait, so I get it now…Jump and Norm…you are the SAME person. Hmm, same IP address, same fear of using your real name to post your opinion.

How spineless you are. Really…create a second fake account to reaffirm what you said in your first post? What a very mature thing to do.

I am sorry I wasted my time replying to both comments. Should have noticed the misspells and bad grammar in both comments a common theme.

Enjoy your day. When you are ready to stop posting behind fake accounts, an give your opinions as YOU rather than on the accounts you created to reaffirm each other…you let me know :-)

Norm, first an foremost, thanks for the read. As you can tell, this is an old article, as this is far from breaking news anymore, and I am sure you read that the story was posted on September 28th.

As a well educated commenter, and blog reader, I am also sure you took the time to read the prior post to this one, as well as the part two follow up.

My opinion on Tebow? Yeah, he is a good guy. He has no doubt set records are Florida, and will go down as one of the top quarterbacks to ever play the college game. No one can take that away from him.

However, look at the history of Gators superstars that flop in the NFL..Danny Wuerffel, Reidel Anthony, Jacquez Green, Elijiah Williams, Terry Jackson, Chad Jackson, Chris Leak, Chris Doering…all great in blue and orange…but what did they ever do at the next level?

UF has a history of having GREAT college football players, but marginal pros at best. Hopefully, this changes with the Urban Meyer era…but looking at the overall history of the program, it would lead one to believe that Tebow would flop like the rest.

I personally, hope he doesnt. I think he is a great role model for children, and we sure do know the NFL needs that…I just don't know if he will do it as a QB…maybe a safety or tight end.
