Rewarding Mediocrity:The Rise of the Seattle Seahawks

Typically, the National Football League is not the place where you would see the celebration of below average play, yet you would be hard pressed to find a team more amped about a 7-9 finish than the Seattle Seahawks.
That is because the Seahawks have made the NFL Playoffs with a losing record. You read that correctly : A team thatlost more games than it won, is one of the final 12 teams in contention for the Lombardi Trophy.
The Seahawks made the playoffs over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New York Giants, ...

4 Reasons I love the Cleveland Browns

In an NFL season that has been anything but normal, I fell in love with an unlikely partner. The Cleveland Browns, a storied franchise that has contributed tons of historic moments to the history of the NFL, is what I consider to be, the most intriguing team in the NFL. Here are a few of the reasons why…
1. A young secondary on the verge of stardom

If it was not for Ndamukong Suh being an unstoppable force in Detroit, you would have heard the names T.J. Ward and Joe Haden as ...

The Brew Crew, The Celts, Agent Zero & True Grit

A lot has gone on in the world of sports in the last 48 hours…and while lots of this stuff has been talked and analyzed to death, I have a few things to say…
Greinke for President!
The Brewers are making an effort to be legit. Really. I first caught wind of the Zach Greinke to Brewers trade as I was glancing over my Twitter feed on the way to work. I thought to myself “Huh? Never woulda guessed he ended up there, who’d the Brewers give up?”
I expected to see that ...

What in the name of Mark Rypien is going on?

The news out of Washington DC is telling us that Donovan McNabb is being benched for this weeks game against the Dallas Cowboys in favor of the usually less than spectacular Rex Grossman.
On Thursday, first year Washington coach Mike Shanahan informed McNabb–a former Pro Bowl quarterback– that he would not be starting the final 3 games of the season. Shanahan went on to tell McNabb that he is not even sure if he will be a member of the Redskins next season, which of course comes as a shock to ...

Perfection & The Future

As I sit here writing this, 18 hours away from what will surely be the most important moment in my life, I can’t help but reflect on the last 18 months, and wonder where I would be without her. What if she hadn’t come into Best Buy looking for a movie I had never heard of, one spring day in 2009?
Without the woman who loves me for me. Without the woman who has put up with more of my crap in the last year and a half, than any one ...

Did Griffey Jr. leave the right way?

Mark the calendars. On June 2nd, 2010, legendary outfielder and ambassador for the game, Ken Griffey Jr. has announced his retirement from Major League Baseball.
You could not ask for a better guy to represent a game. Griffey Jr. embodied what it is to be a role model. He excelled on the field, stayed out of trouble off the field and was a genuinely nice guy. Over his 22 seasons as a Major League Baseball player, Griffey Jr. hit 630 home runs, drove in 1836 runs, had a career batting average ...

Clinton Hart — Series Intro

When I was working at the Sports Editor for The Patriot Press, I was lucky enough to run into NFL safety Clinton Hart at a high school game I was covering for the St. Petersburg Times. I spoke with Hart at the game, and then again a few times on the phone. Hart had played college baseball at Central Florida Community College, so I started a series where we monitored Hart’s progress in the NFL–as he was the first pro athlete to ever come from CFCC. This is the introduction ...

It’s a family tradition

This is a piece I wrote during my time with the Citrus County Chronicle. It is about a brother and sister--Matt & Mettina Maggiore--who both excelled in the classroom and in multiple sports. I always enjoyed writing features better than game coverage because it was always more personal. I can say in all my year's of covering sports, two of the better athletes I ever had the honor of interviewing.

A quickie:horrible playoff picks, a 4 Pack of backers & the great white hype?

My incredible NFL prediction skills…not!
For the first time in 8 years, I was able to watch every minute of every NFL Playoff game throughout the course of an entire weekend. Being that I was a slave to retail management since I was 19, of course, I never got my weekends off.
Now that I am working as an internet marketer in training, I have my weekends free.
When I sat down to make my picks for the weekend however, it seems though, that I forgot one very unavoidable rule:in the NFL playoffs, anything ...

Lady ‘Canes Dominate Colts

During the early 2000′s, no women’s soccer team in central Florida could keep up with the Citrus High School Lady ‘Canes. They had a dominate program, and had several players move on to play at the collegiate level. This game was a great example of their skills.
Thomas Gemkow
Sports Correspondent
The Citrus Lady ‘Canes dominated every aspect of the game as they shut out the North Marion Colts 9-0 in soccer action Friday night.
“We came out sluggish but picked it up in the second half. It’s nice to get ahead by as ...
